The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced that the
celebrated Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio was recognized with the
Cátedra Enrique V. Iglesias of Culture and Development.
This award was created by the organization to distinguish those who have excelled in their work of promoting the progress of Latin America and the Caribbean through the arts and culture.
With a long history as chef and owner of dozens of restaurants, Acurio has managed to position the Peruvian cuisine in the world.
"Gaston Acurio is a reflection of the potential that the Orange Economy has in Latin America and the Caribbean and how through something so typical in our culture, such as food, can enhance the economic and social development of a country," stated Trinidad Zaldivar, Unit Chief of Creativity and Culture at the IDB.
For these reasons, Acurio was selected by the committee of the Cátedra, which is composed by the former President of the IDB, Enrique V. Iglesias; the Minister of Culture and Youth of Costa Rica, Sylvie Duran Salvatierra; the Peruvian-American writer, Marie Arana; and the President of Miami Dade College, Eduardo Padron.
Writers Eliana Poniatowska and Nelida Piñon, among others, have received this recognition in previous years.
Acurio, in addition to owning some of the best and most popular restaurants in the world, such as Astrid y Gaston, created the television program called "The Culinary Adventure" and is author of books, such as "Peru: The Cookbook" and "Buenazo," among others.
Furthermore,
he is recognized for his work promoting the native identity of Peru, by rescuing the culinary culture and social integration through gastronomy. Acurio received his award on May 21st at the main auditorium of the IDB in Washington, D.C.
