Former president Alberto Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison by a Special Court in Lima, which found him responsible of human rights violations for his role in killings and kidnappings by security forces during his government's battle against leftist guerrillas in the 1990s.

This is the most severe sentence, stated Judge César San Martín, who chairs the Special Court in Lima.

The three-judge court said there was no question Fujimori authorized the creation of a military death squad that killed people in La Cantuta and Barrios Altos.

They also stated he was responsible of the kidnappings of journalists Gustavo Gorriti and businessman Samuel Dyer.

The sentence will expire on February 10, 2032.

The 70-year-old former leader said he would appeal.

His congresswoman daughter, Keiko, stated the verdict will only strengthen her campaign for president. She is among front-runners in the 2011 race.
