Foreign Trade-Tourism Min: Peru ready to host events of international importance

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez on Wednesday affirmed that Peru is on the same level as any country when it comes to hosting events of international importance, adding he is sure the organization will be perfect.

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) recently designated the Lima-based Ate Monumental Stadium as the new venue for the Copa Libertadores final match to be played between River Plate (Argentina) and Flamengo (Brazil) on November 23.

Initially, the game was supposed to take place in Santiago (Chile). However, the location was changed due to the social unrest currently underway in the neighboring country.

"First, I would like to show solidarity with the Chilean people. This is a very complex moment they are going through, it is a situation that we would have preferred not to happen," he told Andina news agency.

Likewise, the high-ranking official said the Copa Libertadores final is an important event.

"I understand that the South American Football Confederation decided to rely on Peru to become the host on this opportunity. Although time is short, we are fully prepared to be up to the challenge of hosting an event of this magnitude," he stated.

Peru House and branding

The minister claimed to have read the statements of Peruvian Soccer Federation Chairman Agustin Lozano requesting the support of Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) for this purpose.

"Of course, we will provide them with all the support possible for Peru to look great in this majestic event, with the aim of making foreign visitors feel at home," he underlined.

The cabinet member said a Casa Peru (Peru Home) could be established for the event in order to proceed with the corresponding branding strategy.

He went on to add Mincetur —along with tour operators— will seek to encourage visitors to stay for a few more days in Peru, so they can enjoy the national gastronomy.

Lastly, the minister mentioned that one of the first things he will do after arriving in Lima is to meet with the FPF chairman to address the matter.
