Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Espa on Friday reported that talks have begun with Mexican authorities to eliminate the tourist visa requirement for Peruvian citizens wishing to enter said country.
In an interview with TV Peru, Espa said the issue was discussed yesterday in Mexico by Peru's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Eric Anderson Machado, and the host country's Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Raquel Serur.

They held a meeting to coordinate the upcoming handover of the Pacific Alliance's pro-tempore presidency.

"Mexico will hand over the pro-tempore presidency to Peru (of the Pacific Alliance), so we need to have good relations with Mexico. At that meeting, they have already begun talking about the issue of normalizing visas," the minister indicated.

The Cabinet member said the Government wants the visa exemption for Peruvians visiting Mexico to be reinstated, a measure that had been in effect for more than a decade before being revoked in May 2024.

"We want that system to be reinstated as well. And we have the advantage that we did not impose that requirement on Mexicans. Fortunately, we want many Mexicans to come to Peru; now we also want many Peruvians to be able to return to Mexico without a visa," he noted.

Espa highlighted his administration's efforts since he took office at the Foreign Affairs Ministry to normalize diplomatic relations, particularly with countries that are "close and brotherly" to Peru.

On another matter, he thanked the United States for its support in addressing El Niño phenomenon, which could cause heavy rainfall, flooding, and other impacts during the 2026–2027 season.

In this regard, the Cabinet member highlighted the arrival of the USNS Comfort off the coast of Piura, which is the world's second-largest hospital ship.

"It will arrive in February or March and will be stationed off the coast of Piura. It has intensive care units and facilities for blood transfusions, and it even has the capacity to perform certain surgeries (...)," Espa indicated

"It is a very large vessel with all the capabilities needed to respond to emergencies, as well as a specialized medical crew," he added.
