Environment Min: Peru maintains leadership in climate matters

15:32 | New York (U.S.), Sep. 23.

During the meetings prior to the Climate Action Summit 2019 taking place at the UN headquarters, Peruvian Environment Minister Lucia Ruiz affirmed that the South American country is providing concrete initiatives, which have been implemented as a matter of gender, health, and fair transition that seek the economic and sustainable development.

"Despite being a developing country, Peru maintains the leadership in the climate issue. This has been evident since the COP was held (in Lima) in 2014, a situation that has not changed to date, as we are still at the forefront," Ruiz expressed.

Likewise, the government official highlighted the actions young people have been carrying out worldwide to call on countries in order to take concrete actions against climate change.

"It is important what young people warn us about. They are the present and the future, and we are all vulnerable to climate change," she emphasized.

Ruiz also informed that she had recently held a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. At the event, the actions taken to improve air quality —aimed at contributing to the well-being of people and the environment— were explained.

Among them, the measures related to the quality of fuel, electromobility, and the recent proposal sent to the Congress on the "scrap bond" —which seeks the renewal of the automotive fleet— were addressed.

In addition, the envoy commented on the progress made in the Inca country to integrate the gender perspective into climate action, thus promoting the empowerment of women and girls.

"We have presented to the Secretary General of the United Nations all these opportunities for change that we have made as a country, and how things are done better," she said.

Ruiz —who attends the Climate Action Summit 2019 which kicked off today— participated in the morning meeting on the Rainforest Alliance, where Germany, Norway, and France have expressed concern about the deforestation processes taking place in the Amazon.
