Cusco, Tacna among Peru's most popular destinations for foreigners in 2018

Cusco and Tacna are featured on the list of the most popular destinations among foreign holidaymakers who visited Peru last year, according to the 2018 Foreign Tourist Profile issued by the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru).


Other regions that made the trending list include Lima, Puno and Arequipa.

The study also reveals that 2,728,733 foreign vacationers visited Peru during last year's Independence Day holidays. 

Lima tops the list with the highest number of international visitors (68%), followed by Cusco, the gateway to the breathtaking citadel of Machu Picchu (51%); Tacna (33%), with tourists entering through the southern border; Puno (25%); and Arequipa (22%).


The total number of visits represents an 8% increase compared to 2017, when 2,524,947 vacationers visited Peru from overseas.

According to the study, other purposes of travel were business (15%) and visiting friends and relatives (12%).


Tourism expenditure

The 2018 Foreign Tourist Profile shows that the average expenditure per visitor rose from US$988 to US$1,013 between 2017 and 2018.

This growth was driven by the so-called Centennials (aged 15-24), whose expenditure went from US$652 to US$955, and Millennials (aged 25-40), with their average spending rising from US$819 to US$971 in the same period.
