Ceviche Day: National dish helps fight anemia in Peru

17:16 | Lima, Jun. 28.

Production Minister Rocio Barrios joined Ventanilla wholesale fish market merchants on Friday morning to mark National Ceviche Day in Peru.

The National Ceviche Day is celebrated every 28th of June each year since 2008.

Its creation was intended to promote and spread consumption of this iconic dish in the Andean nation and abroad.

After tasting different versions of the Inca country's signature dish, Barrios invited all Peruvians to take some time to commemorate this internationally-renowned seafood classic.

"When you are overseas and people find out you are from Peru, two words come to their mind: Ceviche and Pisco Sour," the minister commented.

"Therefore, it is a pleasure to celebrate Ceviche Day, as it (the dish) is not only delicious but nutritious, plus it helps fight anemia," she noted.

The government official stressed the fact that Ceviche creates thousands of jobs along the Peruvian coast.

"Small-scale fishermen battle weather conditions to obtain fishery resources so that, subsequently, women and men can give added value by transforming them into delicious dishes," she underscored.

According to the Cabinet member, fresh and high-quality fish is available at fishing terminals, like those in Ventanilla and Chorrillos districts.
