186,000 people have yet to receive the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region; as a whole, the figure rises to 600,000 nationwide, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported on Friday.

"We are following up very close on the entire vaccinated population. At the level of Metropolitan Lima and Callao, we still have a pending gap, which —according to the latest figures revised until last night— stood at 186,000 people. In other words, they have not received the second dose," explained Gabriela Jimenez, head of Minsa's Immunization Directorate, in remarks to TvPeru.

Concerning the national figure, the official explained that it leads to 600,000 Peruvians with a second dose pending.

"Let's remember that 21 days after receiving the first dose, people are already scheduled to receive the second dose. When that time passes, we even give them the margin of one more week, and they enter the category known as laggards," she detailed.

Thus, Jimenez invited the population to participate in the first Vacunatón (Vaccinathon) against COVID-19 to be held this weekend (July 10-11).

On this occasion, more than 1,700 vaccinators will work uninterruptedly for 36 hours at 21 vaccination venues based in Lima and Callao.

Vaccination will run from Saturday at 7:00 a.m. until Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

The first Vaccinathon was designed so that people aged between 47 and 49 receive the first dose. Besides, those over 50 years of age can get the second dose that is pending or those, who are lagging behind, can be duly immunized.
