| Lima, Apr. 16.
Peru's former First Lady Nadine Heredia, sentenced to 15 years in prison alongside her husband, former President Ollanta Humala,
arrived this Wednesday in Brasilia, Brazil, under the diplomatic asylum granted by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's administration.
Heredia, 49, landed aboard a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) plane,
sent to Lima once Peruvian authorities had granted the necessary safe-conduct, negotiated with the Brazilian Government.
The former First Lady was sentenced to prison last Tuesday.
Shortly after learning of the ruling,
she arrived at the Brazilian Embassy in Lima, where she formally requested asylum protection
, which was
granted by the Brazilian Government.
The
wife of former President Humala (2011-2016) arrived in the Brazilian capital with one of their children, Samir, who was also granted diplomatic asylum.
It is still unknown whether she will settle in Brasilia or in another city.
Humala and his wife have been sentenced to prison for the crime of money laundering in the case of contributions to the 2006 and 2011 electoral campaigns, which involved Brazilian company Odebrecht and contributions from the Venezuelan Government.
The
former Head of State was arrested that same Tuesday and incarcerated at the Lima-based Barbadillo Prison
, which also holds
former Presidents Alejandro Toledo
and
Pedro Castillo
