Former First Lady Nadine Heredia is en route to Brazil as part of the asylum granted by the neighboring country, her lawyer Julio Espinoza confirmed on Wednesday.

"The information I can share, based on the coordination we made in the early hours, is that at around 4:00 a.m. an official plane sent by the Brazilian Government took off, implementing this decision by both States, and is already en route, in transit, on its way to Brazil. It is a decision that has already been executed," Espinoza told RPP Noticias.

In that regard, he explained that the transfer was implemented based on the decisions made last night, including the matter of the safe-conduct, which allows for departure without restrictions or interference from Peruvian authorities.

The lawyer specified that Brazilian officials arrived in Peru at midnight, and the departure to the neighboring country took place at 4:00 a.m. Heredia was joined by her youngest son.

Espinoza also dismissed any kind of strategy regarding his client's departure from the country, stating that her health condition, as well as her medical leave following a surgical procedure, were communicated to the court and are publicly known.

"She (Nadine Heredia) connected virtually from her home yesterday until the ruling was issued, and the events that everyone knows followed," he said.

The lawyer stated that his client made a legitimate decision in requesting asylum in Brazil, considering that the early ruling and the execution of the sentence -according to him- contravene a series of criteria previously established by the Constitutional Court.

Moreover, Espinoza said that he has no information regarding any prior efforts or advance procedures made by Nadine Heredia at the Brazilian Embassy in Lima.
