The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday night reported that Brazil granted diplomatic asylum to former First Lady Nadine Heredia Alarcon and her minor son. As a result, the Government has issued the corresponding safe-conducts.

Through a communiqué, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil in Peru communicated that, in accordance with the 1954 Convention on Diplomatic Asylum -to which both States are parties- it decided to grant diplomatic asylum to Heredia Alarcon and her minor son.

In this regard, the Brazilian Government requested the departure of the asylum seekers, invoking Articles V and XII of the aforementioned convention.

The document indicated that "the State granting asylum may request that the asylee be allowed to depart for foreign territory, and the territorial State is under obligation to grant immediately, except in case of force majeure, the necessary guarantees, as well as the corresponding safe-conduct."

"In this regard, in compliance with the aforementioned Articles V and XII, the Peruvian Government has provided the necessary guarantees for the transfer of both individuals and has issued the corresponding safe-conducts," the institution affirmed.
