In the context of the debate at Congress over the 2026 Budget Law, President Jose Jeri stated on Wednesday that it is necessary to generate higher and new revenues for the public treasury to meet existing expectations.

"The challenge is great but exciting. We will address what the budget we have inherited allows us to and be creative in our proposals," he said via social media.

The budget for fiscal year 2026 exceeds S/257 billion (over US$75.96 billion), making fiscal sustainability compatible with addressing national emergencies, according to Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez, who spoke yesterday while presenting the budget to Congress.

He underscored that the proposal maintains the commitment to fiscal consolidation, respect for the allowed deficit of 1.8% of GDP, and the debt ceiling.

After the presentations by the ministers, the heads of the State-run powers and constitutional bodies, Congress began the debate on the reports of the Public Budget, Financial Balance, and Indebtedness Laws for Fiscal Year 2026.

Once approved by Congress, it must be published by the Executive Branch to come into effect.
