Following the announcement of the 14-year prison sentence for the Lomas de Ilo and Moquegua Hospital cases, former President Martin Vizcarra said on Wednesday that this conviction is not justice but revenge.

The former Head of State added that he will not be bent.

Moreover, Vizcarra expressed support for his brother, who is running for President in the 2026 elections under Peru Primero (Peru First party).

"I have been sentenced for standing up to the mafia pact. This is not justice, it is revenge. But they will not bend me. The answer lies at the polls. My brother, Mario Vizcarra, will carry on this fight for you. Peru comes first, and no one will be able to silence it," he expressed via social media.

This morning, Martin Vizcarra attended the sentencing hearing of the Fourth National Criminal Collegiate Court, which found him guilty of bribery in the Lomas de Ilo and Moquegua Hospital cases. These were committed when he was Moquegua region governor.

The court stipulated that the sentence is to be enforced immediately. It also disqualified him from holding public office for nine years and imposed a 730-day fine.

The magistrate read the verdict for the other defendants as well.

Outside the Judiciary's building, Mario Vizcarra told his supporters gathered there that the ruling does not surprise him, although it pains him.

"The Judiciary has just sentenced a righteous man, an honest man, a man like Martin Vizcarra, whose only crime is opposing the mafia," the brother said.

"He has spent his whole life alongside the people, as he demonstrated both when he was Moquegua region governor and when he was president of Peru," he added.

Mario Vizcarra also clarified that he is not surprised by what is happening because "the mafia pact has once imposed itself against reason, against justice."

As is known, Martin Vizcarra was President of the Republic from March 23, 2018, to November 9, 2020. He was impeached and removed from office by Congress.
