Peru President: Tia Maria Project not to start unless concerns are resolved

16:35 | Moquegua (Moquegua region), Jul. 18.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed the construction of Tia Maria mining project will not begin unless all the concerns of Arequipa region's population and authorities are resolved.

In this sense, the Head of State stressed his administration will meet the citizens' demands, as it has always done: through transparent, direct, and honest dialogue

Therefore, the top official asked Islay Province (Arequipa region) residents and farmers to rest assured that the construction will not begin until Southern Peru Copper Corporation and the actors involved in the execution of the project sit down to talk

Likewise, he indicated his administration does not disagree with the stance expressed by Islay Province mayors, inhabitants, or Arequipa Region Governor.

However, President Vizcarra underlined talks cannot take place under an ultimatum.

Tia Maria

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra expressed his administration's willingness for dialogue to resolve differences over the project, which Southern Peru Copper Corporation expects to develop in Islay Province (Arequipa region).

However, Executive Branch spokespersons warned that —even though the license has been issued— this does not mean the mining company can begin operations. It needs to earn —through dialogue— a social license first.

For its part, the mining company committed itself not to start operations before setting up a dialogue space to resolve social concerns.
