Peru President describes meeting with indigenous people as historic

17:52 | Lima, Jun. 5.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra described the meeting with El Pilar indigenous community as historic since today, June 5, is World Environment Day and native peoples are considered the guardians of nature.

The Head of State recalled that on a day like today —11 years ago— 23 people died in Bagua Province as a result of a conflict between indigenous people and the State due to a lack of dialogue and understanding.

"This cannot happen again. We all must work to resolve differences through dialogue and avoid taking things to extremes," he expressed.

For this reason, the top official emphasized that his Government will work hand-in-hand with native communities to extend the State's presence to these areas.

In addition, the statesman stressed the need to ensure the distribution of food under the State-run Qali Warma Program and the provision of bonuses to the poorest families, as well as those who live in remote areas.

"We recognize the failure and the lack of support throughout the years, but this situation must change, and we are determined to do it and to work with the regional government and you (the communities) to make the change you deserve," he added.

The event was also attended by Ministers Fabiola Muñoz (Environment), Sylvia Caceres (Labor), and Alejandro Neyra (Culture).
