The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday called on all political parties in the electoral race to sign a pact for the improvement of public health in Peru.

The Head of State acknowledged that —despite efforts to improve hospitals and care, along with the sacrifice of health personnel— this has not been enough to contain the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the top official, the pandemic has proven that the State failed, and the sustained economic growth —which had occurred for several years— was not used to make adequate investments in the public health system or to rely on more specialized personnel.

"Assuming the responsibility we have in leading the State, I would like to extend a public apology to all the people who have lost a loved one or an acquaintance during the pandemic," Mr. Sagasti expressed.

Likewise, the statesman deemed as essential that whoever is elected at the polls, and all parties in the electoral race, strongly support this effort to improve public health.

Meanwhile, he underlined, his administration will continue working intensely and tirelessly to strengthen public health.

Within this framework, the President recalled that —once he had assumed the Presidency of the Republic— the number of ICU beds went from 1,480 to 2,502, adding that the figure will be increased by the end of this month.

Furthermore, Mr. Sagasti stressed that —in this period— the amount of medical oxygen plants climbed from 63 to 159, increasing the daily production from 41 to 105 tons, which is added to cooperation from the private sector characterized by donations, as well as the import of oxygen from Ecuador and Chile.

Moreover, he mentioned that —in recent weeks— 109 ICU kits have been delivered, adding that his administration will soon announce a new vaccination strategy to reach out to the entire country as more vaccines become available.
