Peru: PM requests candidates to make constructive proposals

17:32 | Lima, Jan. 8.

Peruvian Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos on Wednesday called on candidates running for Congress to make proposals from a constructive perspective, and thus avoid using instruments that do not strengthen Peru's electoral system.

In this regard, the head of the ministerial cabinet expressed his wish that the extraordinary parliamentary elections —scheduled for January 26, 2020— will serve to contrast programs, alternatives, and proposals.

"Each candidate —of the nearly 2,500 who are in the electoral arena— has the opportunity in this space to share with the citizens —through the diverse media outlets— their best proposals," he expressed following the Council of Ministers session.

In this sense, the high-ranking official said the candidates from the 21 political parties participating in the elections are also allowed to state the reasons why they should become lawmakers.

"This way, the country's democracy will not weaken," he added.

Extraordinary parliamentary elections

As is known, the Executive Branch constitutionally dissolved Congress on September 30 and called for parliamentary elections to be held on January 26, 2020.

24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.
