| Lima, Mar. 14.
Peruvian Health Minister Oscar Ugarte
on Sunday affirmed that the
numbers of infections and deaths due to COVID-19 have started to decrease in the country.
However, the
high-ranking official requested the population not to lower
the guard so that this
trend can remain in place.
In this sense, the Cabinet member stated that these indicators have shown a slowdown in recent weeks, adding he hopes that the demand for hospitalization and ICU beds will decrease in the coming weeks.
In the case of Lima,
Ugarte said that there is a downward trend in cases
. For that reason,
the risk level in Metropolitan Lima has been changed from extreme to very high risk, and thus, some sanitary measures have been modified.
"Vaccinating older adults will directly have an impact on the curve of this illness," he stressed.
Likewise, the minister reiterated that the
v
accination of 4.15 million elders registered in Peru might take between two to three months
, depending on the arrival of the doses.
Furthermore, Ugarte indicated that more Peruvians will be vaccinated starting next week
following the arrival of 167,000 doses from Pfizer.
He also announced that the
arrival of AstraZeneca vaccines is underway and that President Sagasti's administration is close to reaching an agreement with Russia's Gamaleya Institute to be provided with more vaccines in April or May.
Moreover, the official explained that the Government currently undertakes efforts
in order to meet the oxygen demand, such as purchasing 960 tons of oxygen from Chile and setting up oxygen plants in hospitals.
