The National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) run by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) has reported that —in recent weeks— there has been a decrease in epidemiological indicators linked to citizens infected and hospitalized due to COVID-19 in 15 Peruvian regions.

CDC Director General Julio Ruiz Olano stressed that the country's effective reproductive number (Rt) —which measures the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in the community— was below 1 (0.7) over the last two weeks.

"This means that, during the last fourteen days, any infected person infects less than he/she did at the end of December when the figure was 1.3," the official explained.

Among the regions with the best numbers are Ica (0.7), Huanuco (0.7), Tumbes (0.8), Huancavelica (0.8), Loreto (0.8), and Junin (0.8).

Likewise, the regions of Cusco, Arequipa, Ancash, Lima, Pasco, Piura, Puno, Tacna, and Apurimac showed improvements in their indicators.

The epidemiologist highlighted that the CDC has been monitoring the country's situation since the beginning of the pandemic —in March 2020— through different epidemiological, mathematical, and social indicators with the aim of contributing to decision-making in the prevention and control of COVID-19.

Therefore, he projected that the decreasing trend will be visible in two or three weeks.

"Although there is a decrease in the pandemic curve, we must not lower our guard. It is necessary to continue complying with preventive measures to help this trend remain in place," he added.
