The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Wednesday called for prudence and calm as he reaffirmed that the next government will make decisions on the purchase of F-16 fighter jets.

In an address to the Nation, the Head of State said he had not lied about the process because he had not intervened in the negotiations, stressing that they did not begin under his administration but earlier.

Likewise, the top official indicated that Peru has other priority needs that must be addressed urgently.

"I believe there is a need to call for prudence and common sense. What is being discussed here, and will always be discussed, is the need for the new government to be aware of the negotiations that have been advanced to date regarding this purchase. There is no other intention," he stated.

In this regard, the top official said there was never any intention to create confrontation with the United States, a country with which Peru has maintained trade and diplomatic relations for many years and which—he stressed—merits continuing in that manner.

"My statements cannot be distorted, but I do understand that we must act prudently and make purchases reasonably so that we have sufficient funds to address so many needs related to potable water, healthcare, and education. That is what has motivated me," he expressed.

The president said it was necessary to explain the situation surrounding the F-16 aircraft to citizens in order to avoid mistaken interpretations.

"We must also understand that there are other priority needs at this time, namely those I have just mentioned. Therefore, compatriots, let us remain prudent and patient, for we will reach a good outcome, and have confidence that I will continue working in the service of those most in need in our country," he concluded.
