Peru: President reiterates Gov't commitment to provide drinking water

10:13 | Lima, Jan. 31.

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Tuesday met with sherpas (advisors) to the members of the High-Level Panel on Water (HLPW), to whom he reaffirmed the Government's commitment to delivering safe drinking water all over the country.

"Peru has two major challenges. One is to tackle climate change since our country is highly vulnerable due to the Andes deglaciation," he stated.

To that end, his administration "is promoting Sierra Azul (Blue Highlands) program to reforest the country's summits and, therefore, reduce glacier melt effects and subsequent water loss in Andean regions."

The President was joined by Ministers Cayetana Aljovin (Foreign Affairs), Carlos Bruce (Housing, Construction, and Sanitation), and Elsa Galarza (Environment).

The High-Level Panel on Water consists of 11 Heads of State and Government (Australia, Mexico, Mauritius, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Hungary, Jordan, Peru, Senegal, South Africa, and Tajikistan), the United Nations Secretary-General, and the World Bank Group President.

Mr. Kuczynski was invited to join the panel when he took office, due to his leadership in executing drinking water supply projects in towns lacking the service.

Peru joined the HLPW on 21 September 2016, and one of its main goals is to adopt public policies that contribute to better sustainable management of water and sanitation, which are the Government's priorities.
