Peru Gov't adopts measures to boost agriculture and raise producers' income

08:00 | Jauja (Junin region), Jan. 28.

The Peruvian Government is promoting Sierra Azul (Blue Highlands) program to boost agriculture and increase the income of producers, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Arista informed.

So much so that 3,000 planting and water harvesting works will be launched to promote agro in High-Andean areas.

The minister visited Jauja city (Junin region) to launch five qochas (micro reservoirs) and a vast reforestation plan to plant more than 50,000 tree saplings in order to promote planting and water harvesting in High-Andean zones, thus increasing the cultivation area.

The Ministry of Agriculture, through Sierra Azul Fund, is intended to increase agricultural water security by contributing to agro prosperity with tree planting and water harvesting in High-Andean agricultural areas, thereby favoring farmers with low income.

"You have a bright future. Keep working the way you are. Besides, the Agriculture Ministry exists because of you. So, continue to reforest the highlands by launching qochas and planting quinoa trees, as they provide several benefits to your families," he was quoted as saying.

Arista led the launch ceremony accompanied by Sierra Azul Head Cesar Davila.

It must be noted the implementation of these qochas will promote other projects to provide water security, reforest the highlands, as well as combat climate change and its effects.
