Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski claimed his administration is committed to protecting water resources from climate change and safeguarding its supply for agriculture.

Speaking from Soraqoccha Lake in Huancavelica region, the Head of State addressed farmers on their day while paying tribute to Mother Earth.

"We are working towards water, to protect it in the highlands; and we are planting polylepis (trees endemic to high-elevation regions of the Andes) for doing so […]," he was quoted as saying.

The 78-year-old said similar actions will be taken in the highlands of Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Cajamarca, Puno, Cusco, Huanuco, Pasco, Abancay and all over Peru.

"Happy Farmer's Day to all of you," the statesman said out loud.

Mr. Kuczynski supervised Sierra Azul (Blue Highlands) —a State-run program aimed at promoting development in rural areas— joined by Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Jose Manuel Hernandez.

The program is intended to build water harvesting structures and reservoirs. It also involves irrigation, afforestation and protection of basins.
