Peru: Presidency highlights potato's importance in food and nutritional security

The Presidency of the Republic stressed the importance of the potato in food and nutritional security, as part of the International Day of the Potato.

This message was shared by the Presidential Office on the X platform on Friday.

"The International Day of the Potato, promoted by Peru at the UN, is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this tuber in food and nutritional security, as well as its global economic, cultural, and environmental impact," it stated.

Likewise, the Presidential Office underscored that potato production reaches 6.52 million tons and is cultivated in 19 Peruvian regions.

In addition, 711,313 producers are involved in harvesting this tuber. Annual consumption reaches 92 kilograms per person.

It also specified that a total of 10,590 tons of fresh and processed potatoes were exported in 2024.

Among the main potato-producing regions are Cajamarca, La Libertad, Huanuco, Lima, Cusco, Apurimac, Puno, Arequipa, Ayacucho, and Ica.
