The power struggle between the Executive and Legislative Branches must stop for the sake of the Peruvian people, who should see State's efforts to improve their quality of life instead of constant political disputes, Prime Minister Mercedes Araoz affirmed Monday.

"We, the Executive and Legislative [Branches], are bound to work and meet the people’s needs instead of being [immersed] in this power struggle that does no good to anyone […]," Araoz said when asked about the recently-submitted impeachment motion against President Kuczynski.

"This must stop for the sake of our people," she added.

Regarding Mr. Kuczynski’s statements on some "traitors," Araoz pointed out the Head of the State was referring to those people who are motivated only by the hunger for power and have no qualms about affecting the country's development.

Likewise, she is sure that First Vice-President Martin Vizcarra is loyal to the nation's stability and that —in due course— he will express his rejection of an illegitimate presidential impeachment motion.

According to Araoz, she has not discussed this issue with Vizcarra but they have addressed the need to work for the country's well-being.

Additionally, the government official stated her efforts as Second Vice-President are geared towards ensuring the continuity of Mr. Kuczynski's administration thru 2021.

Remarks were made during her visit to southern Arequipa region to open the 2018 school year.
