More than 6 million public school children across the country returned to class Monday for a new academic year.

A total of 6,276,375 students went back to class at 85,456 public educational institutions, 82,018 of which are enrolled in the Regular Basic Education program.

Classes are given by 381,853 teachers at 54,608 school units, 52,826 of which provide Basic Education.

The Education Ministry (Minedu) has made great efforts to solve education infrastructure problems in recent weeks in order to guarantee students' physical integrity and provide quality education.

Minedu's efforts were supported by the education community, Armed Forces, and society in general.

The ministry allocated S/515 million (about US$158 million) for maintenance works at 52,000 schools nationwide and replaced existing furniture and equipment at other 873.

Likewise, 3,000 prefabricated classrooms were distributed to Coastal El Niño phenomenon-stricken regions to ensure a smooth opening of classes.
