Peru: Cajamarca to welcome over 15,000 visitors during carnival

00:03 | Cajamarca (Cajamarca region), Jan. 25.

More than 15,000 domestic and foreign tourists will arrive in northern Cajamarca region to take part in traditional Carnival activities this February, Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) Head Julio Palacios projected.

According to Palacios, over 70% of hotel rooms in the area are already booked.

"This year, we expect to exceed the number of visits registered last year," Palacios told Andina news agency.

As is known, some 12,000 tourists arrived in the region in 2017 for Carnival celebrations.

Within this context, the official called on hotel operators, restaurants, and travel agencies to provide good services to all visitors, so they can fully enjoy the colorful celebration and the city's main tourist attractions.

Likewise, he pointed out measures are being taken to strengthen security in major tourist destinations.

The key dates for Cajamarca Carnival are February 10-14. The event will start with the wake of "Ño Carnavalon," a big head figure that helps people say goodbye to bad vibes.

Other activities include a troupe contest and a colorful parade.

The official also underlined most visitors come not only from Peru's northern regions such as Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Ancash but also from Lima.

Lastly, he noted an increased number of foreign tourists is expected this year since Cajamarca was recently chosen by CNN Travel website as one of the best tourist destinations to visit in 2018.
