00:00 | Cajamarca (Cajamarca region), Jan. 3.
The prestigious CNN Travel website has included northern city of Cajamarca (Peru) in its "18 best places to visit in 2018" list that includes the best destinations worth visiting in the coming months.
The Andean city is described as a cultural hotspot known for baroque churches.
The
article mentions one of the city's most popular spots for relaxation known as Baños del Inca (Inca Baths) —a recreational complex of natural hot springs.
According to CNN, Cajamarca has not quite hit its full stride with international tourism.
"That's good news for travelers who find their way to this lofty (over 9,000 feet), resolutely villagey Northern Highlands charmer with its colonial edifices, cobblestone streets, time-warped central plaza, sigh-worthy Andean backdrop and —who would've thought— one of the wilder annual parties in South America," the description reads.
In addition, its
annual carnival is described as Peru's most happening one.
The baroque architecture of its churches, Inca Atahualpa's Ransom Chamber, and the production of dairy products are other Cajamarca's popular attractions.
Finally, the article urges travelers not to miss the hike to the crest of Cerro Santa Apolonia —a stone-stair-lined hilltop shrine towering over the city.
