Colombia confident in Peru's stability

11:50 | Bogota (Colombia), Mar. 22.

The Government of Colombia on Thursday said it deeply regrets Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's decision to resign from his post as Peruvian President.

The message was contained in a press release issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on behalf of the Santos administration.

"Colombia —as a brother country aware of Peru's democratic tradition— is confident the presidential transition of power will take place within the framework of the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution and laws of Peru," the document reads.

Additionally, the ministry expressed confidence in the stability of the Inca country, with which Colombia has strong bilateral and regional ties under the umbrella of the Andean Community and the Pacific Alliance.

Resignation

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement came ahead of the congressional impeachment debate scheduled for Thursday.

As is known, a group of legislators from opposition parties filed a presidential impeachment motion —on the grounds of moral incapacity— after he survived a previous impeachment vote back in December.

This new motion was intended to oust Kuczynski for alleged links with Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
