The 2024 QS World University Rankings saw Peru's highest-ranked university, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, take Latin America's tenth-highest rank, in 336th overall, owed to its strong reputation among international employers, QS highlighted on Wednesday.

"It was also Latin America's sixth most improved university, climbing an impressive 27 positions due to improvements in both Academic and Employer Reputation indicators. It was the only Peruvian university to rank among the world's top 500," it underscored.

Four Peruvian universities were among the world's top 1,000 universities, including newly ranked Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) which is placed in the 951-1,000 band.

Moreover, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) performed excellently in QS Employer Reputation indicator.

"Based on survey responses from some 98,000 international employers, it ranked 75th globally in this metric. With six institutions among the world's top 500, this indicator marks a strength for Peru," QS underlined.

Academic Reputation

Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú also topped the Academic Reputation indicator which assesses responses from some 144,000 global academics. In this metric, it is ranked 177th globally.

However, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos is the only other Peruvian university among the world's top 500.

Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia was the national leader in QS' measure of class size and resource availability, Faculty per Student Ratio, in which it is ranked 277th. No other university is among the world's top 500 for this indicator.

Nonetheless, Peru struggled in QS' metrics related to research. In Citations per Faculty, no university ranked among the world's top 1,000, with Universidad del Pacífico taking the top spot at 1,081st.

A similar challenge was seen in Peru's level of global research collaboration, with Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú ranking 913th for International Research Network.

Employment indicator

Peru produces skilled and employable graduates, according to QS new Employment Outcomes indicator which assesses graduate employment rate and career prospects

Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú was the national leader, ranked 214th while Universidad de Piura came 497th.

Subject

Meanwhile, in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023, two Peruvian subjects are placed in the world's top 100 —one more than the previous edition.

"Of Latin American countries with 10 or more ranked subjects, Peru was the most improved, boasting an overall improvement percentage of 25%. It was also the only Latin American country in which no subjects declined. Only four countries in the world with 10 or more ranked subjects achieved this (Oman, Kuwait, and Serbia)," QS noted.

Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú was the country's strongest institution in the most recent subject rankings, with 19 ranked subjects, including the country's only two top 100 disciplines - Modern Languages (97th) and Archaeology (51-100 band).

It was followed by Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and Universidad del Pacífico, with two ranked subjects each.
