Young Peruvian Anibal Tafur Gutierrez took first place and graduated with honors from the University of Manchester (the UK) with a Master of Science (MSc) in Structural Engineering.

Anibal stood out in the mentioned institution for his research based on the damages a Pisco city's bridge suffered due to an earthquake, which hit this area in 2007.

His innovative proposal comprised the use of seismic rubber insulators to reinforce metal structures of bridges or similar constructions, thus giving them greater resistance to withstand high magnitude earthquakes.

He graduated in Civil Engineering from Lima-based Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP).

In 2015, Anibal became one of the beneficiaries of President of the Republic Scholarships granted by the National Program of Scholarships and Educational Loan (Pronabec).

It must be noted the University of Manchester is one of the 33 most prestigious higher studies institutions in the world.

Experience

Born in Peru's Amazonas region, the student has been nominated for the "Distinguished Achievement" award by the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, thus becoming one of the eight finalists.

"It has been a great experience to enrich my knowledge at a prestigious university. Now, I would like to work as a teacher and dedicate myself to research [...]," he said.

"I hope professionals take advantage of these opportunities that the State is giving through Pronabec, so more young people can leave the country and then return with the purpose of using their knowledge in our territory," Anibal added.
