Domestic and foreign tourists who arrived on Wednesday morning at Arequipa's airport were welcomed with folk dances of Peru and the traditional "Offering to the Earth" ceremony.
The performances were presented as part of the activities to mark the
World Tourism Day.
Thus, the visitors enjoyed dances such as marinera norteña (a dance that portrays a couple's flirtatious pursuit), which caught their attention due to its elegance and melody.
The "Offering to the Earth" ceremony also captivated the attention of tourists, who were asking about the meaning of this Andean tradition.
According to Jorge Meza, head of Gercetur-Arequipa, more than 95,000 tourists have arrived in Arequipa so far this year, and over 135,000 visitors are expected by the end of 2023.
World Tourism Day
According to the United Nations, World Tourism Day is commemorated each year on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
