United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo extended his warmest congratulations to the people of Peru on the anniversary of their independence this Sunday.

"The friendship between the United States and Peru is defined by our shared values of democracy, security, mutually beneficial trade, and human rights," he remarked.

According to the top official in the U.S. Department of State, the partnership between both countries is strengthened by their work together in the region to promote democracy, to fight against transnational criminal organizations, to create greater economic opportunities, and to increase defense and security cooperation.

"This year, we also honor the tenth anniversary of the implementation of the United States-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement, which has helped bring prosperity to citizens of both our nations," he said in a statement.

Finally, he concluded sharing his heartfelt good wishes to the Peruvian people today and in the year ahead.
