UN, OAS confirm deployment of observer missions to Peru

13:37 | Lima, Nov. 17.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Organization of American States (OAS) accepted Peru's invitation to send observation missions, the Foreign Affairs Ministry reported on Tuesday.

The United Nations will send an ad hoc observer mission, while OAS will deploy its electoral observation mission.

In both cases, observer activities will begin in the course of this week, the ministry said in a statement.

According to the government department, given the current political context, Peru highly appreciates the prompt response and willingness of both international organizations to support the country's efforts to ensure the conditions for the general elections on April 11, 2021.

Additionally, Peru thanks them for their contribution to verifying compliance with the election timetable and guaranteeing unrestricted respect for human rights in the country.

In this regard, the ministry said it trusts that the presence of both missions in Peru will contribute to strengthening democratic institutions and the rule of law.
