The Guardian highlights Peruvian culture in virtual travel guide

18:00 | London (UK), Jan. 12.

Peru continues to attract the attention of international travel editors and journalists. This time, one of the most respected newspapers in the United Kingdom, The Guardian, has published its first virtual guide of Peru, the country's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) reported on Tuesday.

The virtual travel guide arises from the difficulty of travelling due to the global pandemic, which has hit the tourism industry hard worldwide, thus causing havoc and confinement in countries such as the United Kingdom.

This did not prevent the British media outlet from nourishing hope in future international trips and —through its virtual travel guides— readers are able to explore music, culture, literature, and local cuisine, fostering travelers' curiosity as far as health conditions allow.

Travel writer Chris Moss wrote this wonderful summary: "Peru is one of the most culturally rich nations in the Americas, and its indigenous people continue to play an important role in daily life; it's sometimes said you can only feel the depth of the Andean experience by running your fingers across one of the beautiful hand-woven textiles."

The best of Peru

The virtual guide includes recommendations, such as books by Hiram Bingham, Hugh Thomson, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Marie Arana, which explore Peru's history, as well as a virtual tour of Larco Museum, and films shot in Peru such as Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo and those by Claudia Llosa.

Additionally, the publication highlights the distinctive features of "Chicha music" and recommends compilations by Los Wemblers de Iquitos as well as Afro-Peruvian music by award-winning Susana Baca and Eva Ayllon.

Regarding gastronomy, Moss recommends following London-based chef Martin Morales in order to learn more about Peruvian food, as well as visiting the website of Gran Hotel Bolivar in Lima to learn about Peru's Pisco Sour cocktail, and see a barman make one.

International promotion

Promoting Peru as a country with so much cultural richness in a media outlet with a global reach is essential to remain an attractive destination for international travelers, as well as to strengthen the Peru Brand overseas.
