Surfing at Lima 2019 Pan American Games

19:28 | Lima, Feb. 7.

For the first time in sports history, surfing will be part of the Pan American Games and one of the qualifying sports for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The High Performance Center (CAR), situated on Punta Rocas Beach, is currently under construction. It will be the second of its kind around the world, after Australia.

This will improve the global standing of Peru —whose millenary inhabitants witnessed the early days of the sport— by placing it within the first six positions of the world ranking.

The center will host Lima 2019 surfing competitions and include a modern sporting infrastructure, which will meet technical specifications required for training.

Such infrastructure includes gyms, a skateboard park, a training pool, a multi-sport sand court, a fixed grandstand for 640 spectators, and accommodation services with 34 bedrooms to house more than 90 surfers from all over Peru.

In addition, CAR will include a restaurant, a living room, an observatory for media access, and observatories for judges during the competition, as well as spaces for disabled people, parking lots, event and ceremony areas, plus a walk of fame.

Surfing

Water sport consisting of keeping balanced on a special board that moves on the waves.

Surfing is a sport of appreciation, where the judges evaluate the surfer, who must perform controlled radical maneuvers in the critical section of the wave, with speed, strength, and fluidity.

Also considered as part of the score are the innovative, progressive maneuvers, as well as the combination and variety of the repertoire.
