stated on Thursday that Peru will become part of the Shield of the Americas to jointly tackle international crime with other countries in the region.
"As Constitutional President of Peru, I am pleased to inform our country that Peru will join the Shield of the Americas, a multilateral coalition comprising more than 15 countries and led by the United States," Fujimori indicated.
"Having had to confront terrorism, we know how difficult it is to now tackle this crime that respects no borders. That is why we need to join forces with other countries," she added.
As the top official explained, being part of the Shield of the Americas will allow Peru to obtain information more swiftly and take firmer action.
"From Peru, we will act with all the powers granted to us by law and the Constitution," she emphasized.
The President emphasized that the presence of the U.S. Secretary of State in Peru symbolizes the coming together of two nations that, for two centuries, have shared the same vision of freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
Throughout that time, both countries have maintained the aspiration for the Americas to decide their own destiny and for no external or supranational force to take away the possibility of continuing to live in freedom, she underscored.
During the meeting with the Secretary of State, they also discussed the risk Peru faces from the arrival of El Niño phenomenon.
Recalling that the process of desilting, clearing waterways, and preparing for the emergency began in early August, the top official thanked the United States for the support it is providing.
"We are thankful that in February 2027, the hospital ship USNS Comfort will arrive on Peru's northern coast," Fujimori expressed.
"This is one of the largest hospital ships in the world, with more than 1,000 beds and high-tech medical equipment. This will provide great relief to the population in northern Peru," she highlighted.
The Head of State also welcomed President Donald Trump's political decision to look toward Latin America and the fact that Secretary Marco Rubio arrived in Peru, saying that this shows the true value being given to bilateral relations.
