Ricardo Gareca to remain as Peru soccer team coach

12:26 | Lima, Aug. 8.

Argentine Ricardo Gareca on Wednesday confirmed the renewal of his contract with Peruvian Soccer Federation (FPF), thus allowing him to stay as national team coach.

Said renewal will bind him to the national squad with the purpose of leading them to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar

The three-year contract will be extended for one more year in case the team qualifies for the mega event.

Coach Gareca —as well as technical staff members Nestor Bonillo and Sergio Santin— attended a press conference at the National Sports Village (Videna).

The aforementioned decision was reached at Videna facilities on Tuesday following a four-hour meeting between FPF President Edwin Oviedo and Gareca's manager —lawyer Mario Cupelli— where the final contract draft was reviewed.

Talks had been extended for more than a week amid the audio recordings scandal involving Peru's judicial authorities, National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) members, and even Oviedo.

Said event unleashed a crisis within the corporation, which prompted the resignation of committee members.

Demands

The Tiger submitted a series of demands for his contract renewal.

As is known, the 60-year-old former soccer player led the Inca team to a World Cup tournament after 36 years.
