The Official Gazette El Peruano registers the highest rating in terms of trustworthiness domestically speaking, according to the Digital News Report 2021 crafted by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, which covers 46 countries around the world.

The recently-released document specifies that "State-run media –El Peruano and TV Peru Noticias– rank highly for trust –even though the government itself is not often trusted."

Concerning the South American country, the report places El Peruano first —in the Brand Trust Scores Category— followed by RRP Noticias, TV Peru Noticias, and Canal N, among other media outlets.

Researcher Lourdes M. Cueva Chacon —who prepared the report based on Peru— believes that "the need to access official information during the pandemic could explain this phenomenon."

Within this framework, the study also mentions that, as in many other countries, access to news via the digital media is consolidating.

The Official Gazette El Peruano, together with Andina news agency and Segraf, are part of the Editora Peru company.

COVID-19 and the media

According to the report, the combination of the pandemic, political instability, and protests has severely affected the media in Peru. Significant job losses throughout the country, and a record number of journalists killed by COVID-19, point to a difficult recovery.

Faced with one of the strictest lockdowns in South America, newspapers stopped printing and it was months before many of them returned to the streets.
