13:06 | Chiclayo (Lambayeque region), Apr. 5.
Approximately 80% of the urban area of Tucume —a district located in the province and region of Lambayeque, 33 kilometers from the city of Chiclayo— was completely flooded early on Wednesday after more than 10 hours of
heavy rain last night.
Tucume Municipality General Manager Miguel Paz requested humanitarian aid for the entire population, whose territory has been surrounded by rainwater, which reached one and a half meters high.
Paz remarked that heavy rain has caused the collapse of more than a hundred houses and a health center, whose equipment and medicines have been damaged by water.
Similarly, Federico Villarreal School in said city is completely flooded, thus affecting its infrastructure.
The local official noted that before this rain, the Municipality's Civil Defense Office had recorded 1,000 people affected, but after last night's rain, the figure is expected to have tripled.
The municipal general manager indicated that authorities are focusing on the identification of locations in the upper part of the town to accommodate the victims.
"The city is situated in the lower part of a hollow, which can be extremely detrimental during heavy rains," he warned.
Moreover, the municipal spokesperson highlighted the support of regional and national authorities, who provided tents, food, heavy machinery, motorized pumps, and hoses to remove rainwater from homes in urban and rural areas.
