President Martin Vizcarra called on citizens and institutions in Peru not to let their guard down in the fight against COVID-19 given the slight decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Speaking from Moquegua region, the Head of State noted that a slight and permanent decrease is expected for the last three weeks, which is evident in said region, Lima, Arequipa, and other regions throughout the country.

In the case of Moquegua, he said, the Rt factor —which measures the average number of people one confirmed case will infect— dropped from 2 to 0.95.

In this sense, he urged the population at large to obverse the Government's rules so that the number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalized patients, ICU admissions and deaths continues to decrease.

According to the Peruvian leader, although the pandemic is entering the final stage, this will take months and does not mean it will end tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

"That cannot lead to triumphalism (…), we have to continue working carefully as we have done since the beginning," he expressed.

"We are in a phase where it (the COVID-19 spread) has started to decline. When does it end? This weekend? No. It can take months until the vaccine comes. It is a gradual process," the statesman added.
