As part of the government's actions to address the increase in violence in Callao, President of Peru Jose Jeri Ore led a search at the Sarita Colonia prison.
The operation, carried out with the support of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces, was conducted decisively in the maximum-security sector of the prision, with the objective of reducing crime and extortion following the murder of public transportation driver José Esqueche Ñingles.

"As one of the responses to the murder of our fellow truck driver in Callao, the Sarita Colonia prison was raided with the support of the Armed Forces and the National Police," said President Jeri, who specified that the operation was carried out without pause or respite.
The head of state contacted the victim's family by telephone to express his condolences and offer them a humanitarian flight to transport Esqueche Ñingles' remains to the Lambayeque region, his birthplace, where he will receive a Christian burial.
The president was accompanied by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Walter Martinez Laura, with whom he supervised the operation alongside the team of prison guards.
The search aimed to detect and confiscate prohibited items used to commit crimes from inside the prison.
It was confirmed that, as the head of state announced in previous days, some corrective measures are already underway, such as the power outage to prevent inmates from charging and using cell phones or other electronic devices.
The affected pavilion houses more than 300 inmates awaiting trial or sentenced for serious crimes, such as kidnapping, extortion, and aggravated robbery, among others.
As part of his evening work schedule, the president also visited the San Miguel district's Monitoring Center. There, along with Mayor Eduardo Bless Cabrejas, he verified the proper functioning of the more than 6,800 cameras the municipality has to monitor any suspicious activity.
