Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso was honored by the Americas Society with the “Gold Insigne” in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments as leader of the Andean nation thus far while in office.
The Gold Insigne is the organization’s highest honor awarded only to democratically elected heads of state from the Western Hemisphere who have promoted greater awareness of the cultural, social and political realities of the region, and greater understanding among the countries of the Americas.
In his speech at the award-giving ceremony held Thursday at the organization’s headquarters in New York, the top Peru's executive outlined the country's infrastructure plan and spoke about his administration's social inclusion policies.
Likewise, the head of State showcased his government’s ongoing plans aimed at increasing education funding as well as about the country's relationship with China, calling it a "strategic partner".
The Council of the Americas is a United States’ business organization whose stated goal is promoting free trade, democracy and open markets throughout the Americas.
Among the past honorees of the prestigious Gold Insigne were Michelle Bachelet, Juan Manuel Santos, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Ricardo Lagos, and Álvaro Uribe.
