The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Thursday urged Parliament to respond properly to the legislative initiative submitted by the Executive Branch, with the aim of bringing the general elections forward to the end of 2023.

Mrs. Boluarte paid a technical visit to Talara Refinery in Peru's northern Piura region.

Afterwards, the Head of State indicated that her administration had presented the proposal, previously announced during an Address to the Nation, so that the electoral process takes place at the end of 2023 and she can hand over the government to new authorities in January 2024.

"I think that Congress has already (received) the legislative initiative that we had sent; we just ask them, with the respect that corresponds as the first State power, to respond properly to the needs raised by the people, that is, the advancement of elections and that we all leave (office)," she stated.

While addressing the media, President Boluarte specified that her administration will await the decision to be made by Parliament regarding the proposal submitted by the Executive Branch.

Mrs. Boluarte said she could not give a preliminary opinion on the matter because "the issue is in their hands."

Furthermore, the top official explained that her resignation is not under discussion in case this new initiative is rejected by the Congress of the Republic, since this request comes from those violent groups which, "by way of blackmail, launch said slogan."

Solution to the crisis

The President affirmed that putting an end to the political crisis that the country is experiencing depends on minority and violent groups "reflecting and working to shape a united country."

"We only ask that they set aside their political interests and the economic interests behind them, and that we bet on Peru, on that united homeland that wants to work in peace," she stated.

Moreover, the Head of State reiterated her call for dialogue with those who lead violent movements, considering that "we, Peruvians, are peaceful, and we do not generate violence."
