The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Thursday affirmed that Peru and Ecuador have proven indefatigable dedication to the cause of peace, which can be witnessed in various actions of mutual support and cooperation between both countries.

Mrs. Boluarte made these statements during the ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Brasilia Peace Accords.

Today's event took place at the Government Palace in Lima. It also saw the presence of Ecuadorian counterpart, Guillermo Lasso.

"Peru and Ecuador have proven indefatigable dedication to the cause of peace; we maintain a relationship of full mutual trust, which has meant that nowadays our Armed and Police Forces actively cooperate to confront the challenges posed by global security, climate change, natural disasters, and transnational crimes," she stated.

In this sense, the top official indicated that the peace accords translated "into the largest and most sustained increase in bilateral economic trade in our common history."

"Bilateral trade from 1989 to 2022 has accumulated a total value of US$40.500 billion, and 96% of that figure corresponds to the period from the signing of the Brasilia Peace Accords," she affirmed.

Added to this —Mrs. Boluarte said— are the important Peruvian investments in Ecuador and those by Ecuadorian companies in Peru, "generating quality jobs and enriching complementary relationships among productive sectors."

"The true friendship that unites us, the complementarity we have, and the opportunities generated by our neighborhood allow us to confront new challenges optimistically," she expressed.

The president asked her Ecuadorian counterpart to continue building in democracy and freedom "a future of development and well-being for Peruvians and Ecuadorians, valuing the historic ties that unite us."

"The friendship between Peru and Ecuador is sound, permanent, and irreversible; we were born as brother nations, and we project ourselves as brothers into the future," she added.

The top official said that, in the current context of uncertainty that the world is going through, she hopes "our example (set by Peru and Ecuador) can inspire other latitudes, illuminating the path towards a more united and supportive world."

"25 years ago, we had the courage and bravery to solve, through dialogue and negotiation, differences that seemed to have no solution; the current times we live in prove that peace is the boldest bet in the face of apparently-irreconcilable differences that cause conflicts and wars," she added.

Statement

Afterwards, the Peruvian Head of State, accompanied by her Ecuadorian counterpart, issued a joint statement.

On the occasion, they highlighted the importance of the Brasilia Peace Accords, and how this document put an end to differences between both countries.

Furthermore, President Boluarte explained that this agreement allow progress to be made in the bilateral relationship, the increase in mutual investments, security, as well as in social and productive development projects.

"We have reaffirmed our commitment to democracy, human rights, social peace, and the strengthening of our relations," Mrs. Boluarte pointed out regarding the meeting held with her counterpart, Mr. Lasso.
