Peruvian exports hit record high in 1H 2021

09:00 | Lima, Aug. 11.

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez has affirmed that Peruvian exports amounted to US$24.439 billion in the first half of 2021, up 47% over the same period in 2020. This is highest value for this period in previous years.

In this sense, the government official affirmed that this good performance is attributable to higher prices and the sustained recovery in production and exportable supply.

According to the minister, the Government seeks to translate these important results into more opportunities and a greater number of jobs for Peruvians, with a decentralized approach.

"To do so, it is important to strengthen ties with our trade partners. We will promote the opening of bilateral trade markets and regional integration to contribute to the growth of exports, production, employment, and foreign exchange earnings. Achieving this is essential," he affirmed.

Commenting on the Monthly Trade Report-June 2021, the Mincetur head explained that the positive evolution of exports is the result of a growth in shipments of traditional (US$17.215 billion; up 50.4%) and non-traditional (US$7.224 billion; up 40.7%) products.

"In the first half of the year, all sectors in the country reported a rise in their exports. The most dynamic of which were fishing, which grew 119%; the textile industry, which saw a rise of 87%; and the metallurgical sector, which recorded an increase of 117.5%," the Cabinet member remarked.

Another aspect worth noting has to do with jewelry exports, which expanded six fold to US$47 million. In fact, only in June, these sales totaled US$9 million (up 312%).

Agro-exports may set new record

On the other hand, traditional and non-traditional agro-exports have grown steadily, thus reaching US$3.448 billion in the first half of this year, up 21.4% from the same period in 2020 (US$2.84 billion).

"The continuous growth in Peruvian agro-exports —despite the COVID-19 pandemic— enables us to forecast a new record high by the end of the year," Sanchez pointed out.
