Peru's Winikunka (Quechua word for Seven Color Mountain or Rainbow Mountain) will reopen to tourists starting next week after the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) and the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) have verified the observance of health protocols to avoid COVID-19 contagion.
This natural tourist attraction is located between the provinces of Canchis and Quispicanchi in
Cusco region.
Fredy Deza, the head of
Dircetur Cusco, told Andina news agency that the reactivation of tourism in this region is underway and that said process might move into a trial phase next week to verify compliance with biosafety measures.
The reopening will be carried out by the jurisdiction of Cusipata district (Quispicanchi Province), where Dircetur, Cusipata Municipality, and Police authorities, as well as community leaders, gathered on Tuesday.
While Winikunka is reopened via Cisupata district, the reactivation is also expected to occur via Pitumarca district (Canchis Province), whose authorities are scheduled to meet on November 30 at 9 a.m. (local time).

Inhabitants in the communities of Chillihuani, Paucarpata, Tintinco, as well as Cusipata authorities and tour operators, implemented biosafety measures a few weeks ago. They even prepared a promotional video.
According to the short film, the tour from Cusco City to Winikunka will be conducted only by authorized tour operators who will ensure that biosafety measures are applied, such as temperature checks, as well as mandatory use of face masks, face shields, and hand sanitizer.
Furthermore, social distancing and disinfection of vehicles will be prioritized. The ticketing booth will provide information on the route and biosafety measures to comply with, as well as on the use of devices to avoid contact.
