Peru: Cusco relies on tourism to reactivate post-coronavirus economy

09:00 | Cusco (Cusco region), Sep. 30.

Tourism will be the activity that will promote Cusco's economic reactivation, said Fredy Deza, head of the Regional Foreign Trade and Tourism Directorate (Dircetur), noting that this institution has prepared a plan to that end.

Deza affirmed that the aim of the reactivation plan is based on following, monitoring, and seeking the approval of the region's strategic plans on exports, tourism, and crafts.

In addition, the plan is intended to assist the people affected by the economic impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic during the reinvention, reorganization, and reactivation process, according to their skills.

The head of Dircetur Cusco noted that the Regional Tourism Council will be activated and agreements will be reached with universities in order to promote scientific research in tourism.

In addition, amendments to the General Tourism Law No. 29408 D.S. 004-2019 and the legislation will be promoted in favor of tourism service providers (regarding access to health, as well as employment and social benefits).

According to Deza, Dircetur will provide financial support to 520 artisans with a fund of S/200,000 (around US$55,663), as well as to 797 tourist guides, tourism graduates, and drivers, among others.

Moreover, Dircetur's financial assistance will cover the promotion of tourist sites via virtual tours, surveillance and security plans, information survey activities on lodgings, tourist resources, and community tourism ventures, thus entailing an investment of S/774,000 (around US$215,418).
