Peru's President: Vaccine is highly effective in preventing COVID-19 deaths

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Monday affirmed that the vaccine against COVID-19 is very effective in preventing deaths and hospitalizations in ICU rooms. Therefore, he requested citizens not to be afraid or pay attention to biased reports whose main purpose is to destabilize the Government of Peru.

"Here in Peru, up to now and in other parts of the world, the vaccine is highly effective in preventing deaths, in preventing hospitalizations in ICU rooms (…); that is what matters to us," he said in remarks to Piura-based Cutivalú radio.

The Head of State indicated that the fake news regarding the efficacy of the vaccine also seeks to postpone the general elections initially scheduled for April 11.

"We must not be afraid or pay attention to those biased reports. As citizens have witnessed, those (reports) have no other purposes than to destabilize the Government and to postpone the elections, something that we have promised to carry out on time," Mr. Sagasti expressed.

"What we are witnessing is an attack against the political stability of democracy but disguised as criticism of a study of a vaccine," he added.

The top official said the legal actions that the Government will take in the face of the broadcast a fake report on the vaccine is in the hands of the Ministry of Justice.

However,

the statesman remarked how severe and terrible are the irresponsibility of distortion, fake news, and advertisements interested in serving mean interests, which cause enormous harm to citizens.

The Peruvian leader argued that the Executive Branch is facing this wave of lies in the clearest way by providing truthful information, making it available to the public in such a way that they take note "and realize that vaccines are safe and effective, as well as manage to avoid the worst expressions of this disease."

The dignitary also recalled that clinical trials have been carried out in six or seven countries of the world, not only in Peru, and that the Sinopharm laboratory vaccine has been administered massively to people in China, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco, among other nations.
