Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Tuesday affirmed that he is confident the presidential runoff election —scheduled for June 6— will run smoothly.

In statements to the press, the Head of State said the terrorist attack in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), which left 16 people dead, will not prevent the upcoming election from taking place, with all the necessary security guarantees.

"This does not threaten the holding of the election at all. Members of the National Police and Armed Forces are already being deployed, as they have been during the entire electoral process," he said.

Mr. Sagasti recalled that the first round of elections ran without problems across the country.

"Rest assured that this election will run smoothly and without problems," he remarked.

"The most important thing is that the will of the people —expressed at the ballot box— will be respected," the country's top official pointed out.

He went on to say that the electoral process continues consistently. In this respect, he noted that the election observation missions have already arrived in the country.

Remarks were made at the end of a ceremony marking the handover of COVID-19 vaccines and the delivery of a medical oxygen plant to the regional hospital, located in the city of Trujillo.
